PICK THE RIGHT SOFTWARE

Download ImgBurn here.
http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/ ... t-drivers/

You will end up with 1 rar file named "UPDATE_IMGBurn_2.5.7.0._w_Dreamcast_Support"

Extract it.

This will give you 2 files.
1. cdi files for imgburn (rar file)
2. SetupImgBurn_2.5.7.0

Image

Double click the SetupImgBurn_2.5.7.0 and install it.
Nothing special to do here. Just click next until you are done. When it asks where to save it to, I just use the default C:\Program Files\ImgBurn\

A few seconds later, its installed.

Now, unrar the file "cdi files for imgburn"
This will give you 3 files. These are the files you need to burn your DC games with ImgBurn.
1. pfctoc.dll
2. pfctoc.h
3. pfctoc.lib

Image

Now, go to where you installed ImgBurn. If you followed what I said, it will be at C:\Program Files\ImgBurn\ Open your ImgBurn folder, and drop the 3 cdi files into the root of the folder. pfctoc.dll, pfctoc.h, pfctoc.lib

Your ImgBurn folder should look exactly like this. If it looks like this, congratulations. You now have ImgBurn installed and are ready to burn not only Dreamcast games, but just about any other disc based game. I use this program for all my discburning needs.

Image

GET READY TO BURN YOUR GAME

The game I am using in this tutorial, is House Of The Dead 2. CDI format

This is a ReviveDC release. It is located here
http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/dre ... c-release/

Extract your game file using 7zip or winrar.

Open ImgBurn.

Click "Write Image File To Disc"

Image

Now Click "File" in the top lefthand corner, and click "Browse For A Source File"

Image

Find the CDI you want to burn, and double click on it.

Image

Put a blank 700mb 80min CD in your burner (unless the game you are burning is a higher capacity game like 99min). On the right hand side of your ImgBurn screen, change the write speed to 16x. (Regarding burn speed--- everyone has their own opinion. For Dreamcast 16x works perfect for me 100% of the time)

There is also a box you can check or uncheck that says "Verify". If you click this, after it burns it it will check to see if it burned properly without errors. Personally, I stopped using verify because I got sick of waiting. If theres errors, you cant fix it anyway. If it works, it works, if it dont, it dont. If you want peace of mind that it burned ok, click it. If not, dont.

Click burn. This is the icon that has a disc on a piece of paper, with an arrow pointing to a disc.

Image

During the burning process, it will give you updates as it burns in the bottom imgburn box. It will tell you what mode its burning in, if the write speed was successfully set, and other info. If it says write speed was not successfully set, dont worry. It will automatically choose the speed for you based on you blank disc and burner speed limits. If there are any kind of errors going on, you will get a yellow triangle with an explanation point in you log box.

Wait for it to finish burning, and viola, get ready to play.

Image

Enjoy, Im off to smear some zombies. Thanks for the perfect rip RDC!

As a side note to this. When you pop a blank disc into your burner, ImgBurn puts some useful information up on the ImgBurn screen.

It will tell you what supported write speeds your disc is capable of burning at. The disc im using for instance, if you look in the photo above, supports 16x, 24x, 32x, 40x, 48x. Most modern discs you purchase in a store has the lowest write speed of 16x. So some people who say they burn at 1x speed, actually arent. They are burning at the lowest write speed their blank disc and burner support, and just dont realize it.

Another key piece of information ImgBurn provides you with is the manufacturer of the disc. If you look in my photo, these discs were manufactured by a company called "Plasmon Data Systems" Almost all sellers of blank media do not make their own discs. Its all outsourced to a handful of companies. Sony doesnt make their own discs, neither does Verbatim, neither does TDK, and not even Memorex.

The disc im using in this tutorial is considered very low quality. They are a Office Depot brand called Ativa and are manufactured by Plasmon. Im out of decent discs and had these laying around.

Taiyo Yuden is going to be the best affordable discs you can use. There are better, but the price is high. Taiyo Yuden is considered 1st class media. You can buy actual Taiyo Yuden discs with that brand name. Im not sure if Verbatim still use them, but Verbatim AZOS are, or used to be Taiyo Yuden.

But just because it says Verbatim, doesnt mean its quality. They also have a Data Life series, which is their value line. Im not sure who makes them, but I have heard very bad things about them.

Memorex is (or used to be, can change at any time) manufactured by Ritek. Ritek is considered a 2nd class media. They are very reliable also. I beleive the Sonys I have used in the past were Ritek, but no clue who makes them now.

TDK and HP, seem to always be manufactured by CMC. CMC is considered a 3rd class media. They are recommended to avoid, due to having a wiude range of quality. Personally, I have used lots, and I mean lots of CMC made discs for Dreamcast, PS2, PS1, 3DO etc, and I have never had any problems with the quality. So why CMC gets a bad rap, I really dont know.

No probs. The gamepages always get slimed up by people saying the files are no good. Probably wont do any good though, no one will read this after its scrolled off the homepage lol. Its the thought that counts though.

DJ is good. I think comrade still uses it. My thing with DJ is when i first rediscovered my DC, i read all these tutorials on DJ. And produced coaster after coaster. Ends up, I think DJ didnt like my burner. I think thats one of the reasons some people report alot of problems using DJ. I had no problems burning other systems games, or movies, was just DJ that wouldnt work. Then come to find out, on my other computer that i had stored away in a closet, DJ worked fine. I always used ImgBurn for my PS2 games. Then atreyu put out his ImgBurn pack with the CD files and was like heaven. Was able to use my favorite program, on DC games. And its just so straight forward, no settings to mess with like Raw, Dao, Tao, CDXA, block numbers etc. Just click and burn.

I usually use Memorex or Verbatim for burning DC games, but TDK, HP, and Phillips have all worked fine for me as well. Again, a great tutorial!

Verbatim are excellent when you buy DataLifePlus AZO, those have an ID code of Mitsubishi Chemical Corp [MCC]. Taiyo Yuden and JVC media have an ID code of TAIYOYUDEN, TYG01, TYG02, YUDEN

What if I have a PS1 image, it's a img .sub .ccd cluster. No .cue, would ImgBurn be able to use all..?

I also get .mdf .mds not so sure

Thanks for the tutorial! I just found and dusted off my Dreamcast (note to self: need to wipe food-looking substance off...) but it works. The only problem is, all of my game discs are now good-looking, four-tracked frisbees. Scratched beyond repair. So, what with the fact the games (nor the GD-ROMs) aren't made anymore, I needed this. Thanks.

(Whoops. Realized that four-track wasn't quite accurate, but I was referring to the sound, PC data, copyright, and game data sections of the disk)

First i'd like to say thanks to you, Smashey! I run Linux and BootDreams, Disc Juggler, and Alcohol 120 just wont work. But this worked smashingly....for awhile.

I burned 8 games total including a Utopia disc, all TDK. Well on the last 2 TDK, it stopped working. So next I had Memorex and none have worked. All burnings I have done have been exactly as you lined out in this tutorial so I have changed no settings and none of my failed attempts work with Utopia. Some have been Mode2 and audio but neither work.

Is it the games i'm downloading? They are from different sites/ torrents but are confirmed as legit. Maybe something happened to my burner? Or maybe something got changed in ImgBurn? I dunno, but I hope you have heard this issue before and can offer some advice.

Thanks again for everything!

Well, I just tried to burn a game again that I already burned that worked (Jet Grind Radio FTW) and the second copy did not work. I looked at the files on both CD-R's and they seem to be exactly the same. So I will go ahead and assume something is wrong with ImgBurn. I have changed no settings in the program itself, nor have I messed with any of the files required to burn Dreamcast games. Any help?

And again, THANK YOU to all involved it this project and the file creators. When this was burning properly I was overjoyed. But now, I'm just really really sad.

Seems to me it is your laser or choice of CDR's as I have burned everyone of my DC games using this pack as I uploaded it and not one coaster ever using Taio Yunden high quality CDR's. The great thing about IMGburn is there is no settings to fuss with to make games work. AZO dye is the best for making backups but only two manufactures use this dye. that is Taiyo Yunden and JVC AZO disc. I would bet you laser just needs a little calibration and good disc burned at 16x will go a long way in how hard your DC has to access data on the disc. When using good disc the DC doesn't have to stress it's laser much to read the data and secondly this dye last for years without any corruption something I can't say for Verbatim's, TDK's, Memorex, or any other disc. IMGBurn will even tell you the disc dye type to ensure you have real AZO dye as a lot of fake JVC AZO's and Taio Yundens are made/cloned.

Thanks for the feedback, as you seem to know what your doing. However, given the fact that I burned a handful of discs with not a single problem, I doubt its the disc and i'm looking at an issue with my burner. I have decided to uninstall ImgBurn and install it again.

If that does not work, I may try to pick up some Taiyo Yunden's if the price is right. Thanks for the help and I will continue to take any input on my problem till it is 100 percent not an issue.

Sorry to bog down the comments guys, but i'm pretty sure it's my drive. I'm getting I/O errors now on simple games like Bust a Move 4. My dreams of playing some Dreamcast games for the first time since I couldn't get one when I was a kid have been ruined. Kinda a waste now the only action this little guy will see is some Jet Set Radio.

Again, sorry for cluttering up the comments section. After trying everything, I was overjoyed to find that this works on Linux so when it stopped working, I had to try to fix it. Thank you Atreyu and Smashey for the awesome help.

Please, everyone, keep the Dreamcast alive.

Thanks for the tutorial man!
By the way, I intend to buy a dreamcast ASAP, but I still have a doubt: does this burnt discs work in a similar way than saturn ones with the swap trick? I mean, do I have to mod a dreamcast in order to make them work or do they work fine in an unmodded dc?

So where does it say what speeds you can burn at ?

I only see speeds after burn is done, not when I just pop in the potential blank. I've had more success with DJ and not a whole lot.. Sony blanks and some stupid modern burner I guess

Change the AWS setting to allow different speeds. Basically that will just burn as fast as your burner can.

@Vash32: you can not burn at x1 because modern disc dont support that speed, if you were burning at 1x it would take you like an hour (yes an hour!) to burn one 700MB cd, I know because like 15 years ago I had one of the first comercial cd burner (max speed 4x! lol) and I use to burn at 1x all the time because cd burning was something so new that if you use the maximun speed (4x!) it would cut out 1 or 2 seconds of the songs of music CDs.
Today discs not only have a max speed but also a min speed (16x?) you can not burn cd bellow that speed.
