Well that's annoying... virus.

You know what really grinds my gears?

Well that's annoying... virus.

Postby MasterOfAll » Mon Jul 17, 2017 6:51 am

I've not had a computer suffer from a virus, etc, etc from well over 10 years.

And today I've been slapped with one that's proving a pain to get rid off.

All I did, was run a game update file, for an old game. A con it seems.

Everything I do on the net, throws up crazy Russian ads, or throws me to some other site, that has nothing to do with where I'm trying to look at.

So, this should be a fun day!

I've ran Malwarebytes.

I'm currently running Zemana Antimalware

And I'll be running hitman pro after that.

I know there's hijackthis as well, but I can never be arsed with figuring out myself what's needed and not needed.

Any ideas of newer fancier stuff I can run that's good and is free, to hopefully kill off this Russian pain in the arse?

EDIT: Will try AdwCleaner as well.

Thanks! Both of those found stuff, that the other ones didn't.

Rougekiller seemed to be a major player though.

I still was getting ads after using it, but then I deleted Chrome completely, and reinstalled it. Reset the computer, and everything seems to be fine again! I'd tried that once already, and that didn't fix it.

Just the fun practice now, of changing all my passwords to all the sites I visit. Doesn't really bother me, because I have so many, half the time, I have to reset them anyways. LOL

I of course need to reinstall ABP etc, etc as well. Oh well - that won't take long.

Thanks again!

I've been in the IT game for over 20 years...

Quoted right from that site...

"Windows XP/Vista/7/8
32-bit program. Can run on both a 32-bit and 64-bit OS."

"This program works with Windows 8, but not Windows 8.1 at this time!"

"Last Updated: 07/11/17 12:40:02 PM EDT"

If it doesn't work with 8.1, it's not going to work on 10. Even if it does - it's not something I'm willing to risk screw things up even more so, when trying to clear up my PC, fast.

I think I got hit with something pretty new, because most of the well known stuff wasn't picking it up. I've set it them to have a pick through now anyways.

Web pop-ups are more Malware/Adware based than a actual virus...
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.62 (OLD Version 100% FREE) is still top at killing this shit.
Plus ADVANCED Mode allows you to block over 100000 nasties by adding them to your HOSTS file
by 127.0.0.1'ing all the "Spamware" IP's as well as Immunization which no other program touches !
"Malwarebytes Anti-Malware/anti-Rootkit" are BOTH worth running on your system.
Rootkits don't get caught by most anti-Virus's so a RK Scanner is advised too ! Even if you system looks "Clean"

Spybot 2 is a pain in the arse ! don't bother, stick with Spybot 1.62

PS I hope it wasn't from looking for the sanitarium 1.10 patch.... I gave up

I've found Malwarebytes is usually the best as it will get rid of stuff a traditional antivirus program won't find. Having said that I've heard Bitdefender and Kaspersky are very well respected antivirus programs right now. Good luck.

(The best way is to restore from backup images of course.)

This is not absolutly true. Cobofix care only about one adware called "Counterfix" what is known for spaming users with annoying ads. Counterfix is very hard to remove by yourself and that is reason to create single run utility Combofix. How i know it ? Once i ran into trap too and have these ads for 2 months

The most sure way to get rid of any software you don't want on your computer is to reinstall the OS. Yes, its extreme, and will take a long time, and you will lose anything that isn't backed up, but it works.
Another option, which will pretty much take care of this completely and permanently (but doesn't have as many options for games, but the list is growing every day, check steam) is Linux. You can even run some windows programs on Linux through wine and virtualbox (virtualbox is available for windows as well, so you could keep a vm with 90% of your resources for your games and then delete it and make a new one every time something breaks or decides to infect it). Another plus for Linux is that it has an emulator for everything, though some of them might be more difficult to set up, and some easier. My Ubuntu machine has an emulator for ps2, ps1, saturn, md, ms, nes, snes, n64, gc, and any other emulator I could possibly want. It also has drivers for practically any controller I plug into it. It does take time to learn how to use it, but for a beginner I would recommend Linux Mint, and if that isn't an option then I would do Ubuntu.

Malwarebytes as mentioned, also ADWCLEANER free which is also now owned by Malwarebytes, download and run delete what it finds and it will reboot, run again, great for rooting out that stuff popping up in your browser etc.

https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

One highly recommended suggestion if I may? Start imaging your OS on a regularly basis. I started this practice years ago. YES you could simply re-install but we all know how time consuming that is because nit just re-installing the OS but all the following updates, re-install programs, configure and getting everything back "just right" is very time consuming and a pain. I image the entire OS partition using a bootable ACRONIS Backup USB stick, takes about 10-15min MAX (this is why you always have the OS on a smaller partition / drive) and when disaster strikes use it to boot back into Acronis, select the image and choose recover. Within 10-15 min BOOM I am back up and running within 15 min EXACTLY as it was as if nothing ever happened. Using this method has been a life saver, I average doing such OS image approx once a week and so have not had to do a full re-install for years and saves the headache of having to update, re-configure etc. Disaster CAN and WILL strike everyone whether it is human error, virus or hardware failure, once I accepted that years ago I investigated how I can recover and get things back up and running as they were the fastest way possible, imaging the OS was the answer and honestly I wondered how I lived all those years dangerously before I started doing that lol. ;)

Malware's getting crazy these days.
I got hit by ransomware recently (the aleta variant of BTCWare) - and anyone that knows me knows I take my pc security very seriously... it was therefor a massive shock that I got hit by something so nasty. As it turns out, no amount of security/AV/AM apps would've saved me, as it was a live hack via an RDP vulnerability (when they had access to my system they disabled and uninstalled malwarebytes and my av so they could run the malware).
I was kind of lucky, as I noticed the user logon screen pop up while I was doing something else in the room, and I managed to pull the plug before the file encryption had a chance to encrypt all 3Tb of internal storage. The only data I've lost is a small chunk of my mp3 library that I don't have back ups of (some other stuff was encrypted, but that's all recoverable from back ups), and most of that is easy enough to redownload or rip from disks.
Two weeks later I've still not booted up my main OS - I've spent almost all my free time doing data housekeeping and thoroughly disinfecting every trace of malware... ironically, I'm currently using my winXP dual boot as it gives me more control of the systems security.
I've been through many of the tools already mentioned in this thread, but I'd also like to add a couple that I found quite handy in my particular situation; I used a variety of rescue disks, but the BitDefender one seemed to find stuff that none of the others did. Also, the Hirens Boot cd proved invaluable again.

If it has not been mentioned, try to run your antivirus in safe mode with netowrking. I like to use Rkill(stops known process that might be malware), Adw Cleaner(now pwned by Malwarebytes), Eset online scanner(free), and top it off with malware bytes. that usually does it.

But usually though, If I get hit with a virus, and I have doubts its really gone, I just Wipe the damn computer out lol.

Also if you have windows 10, there is an option to Reset Windows without losing your stuff. but I would back up important stuff 1st just in case.

Ive also been in the I.T. game for a long time. :). Pro tip: Test out your games/programs on a Virtual machine 1st. :). I learned that the hard way.

good luck.

Oh I know you weren't trying to out do me Zombie. I just wanted to point out, that bit of software doesn't work for 10.

Everything is all back to normal now anyways. :)

As I'm sure you know - you have you're own little kit of apps that you use. But when you get slapped with something you new, it's easier to reach out and find newer bits of kit from fellow nerds that have bumped into the same sort of the problem.

Computers have been making me pull my hair out for over 30 years! LOL

Yea I love adwcleaner. It comes in handy whenever a program doesn't find something. I use it just to be on the safe side.

Others I use:

Malwarebytes
Avast!
SuperAntiSpyware

All of which do a good job.
