Is There a PS2 Modding Guide For Complete Idiots??

Postby Xylob » Mon Jan 15, 2018 1:23 am

Cleaning out the basement and coming across all kinds of cool stuff like a CIB Conker's Bad Fur day, an original Wii, a TurboGrafx-16 with component video, my original SNES, two(!) SCPH-30001 PS2s, a PS2 component cable, an SCPH-10281 Network Adapter, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Last month I found a ton of cool stuff to make my Wii do all manner of shit it was never intended for and it's darn nifty now.
I've spent the past week or so combing through this site and googling up the interwebs to learn how to do something similar with the PS2. I've found lots of information. Lots of confusing and contradictory information.... :? :? :?

Initially I thought for sure I could use it to run a Sega Saturn emulator. No dice there.
Now what I'd like to do is play original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games from HDD.
I love how USBLoader GX let's me rip my GC and Wii games with the console directly to the HDD, but it's really not clear if any of the tools for PS2 do that.

I need:
-some assistance finding the right tools to get my PS2 set up with a HDD
-some assistance finding the right tools to get my PS and PS2 discs onto my HDD without a mod-chip &/or any soldering
-instructions on how to use those tools
-an easy to use GUI for launching the games once on the HDD
-tools to allow games from other regions to be played (either from disc or HDD)

I have:
-two "fat" PS2s. One with date code 1A, one with date code 1C.
both have had disc read errors, but it's been so long I don't remember what they were
-broadband/HDD adapter
-stacks of PS and PS2 discs
-Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB 6Y160P0 HDD already set to cable select and hungry for data
-Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
-a shit ton of downloaded tools I have no clue what to do with

I just couldn't bring myself to ditch the consoles, after looking around I'm glad I kept them as it looks like I can still get some use out of them.
My PS3 is OG and will actually play PS and PS2 games, but it's been taken over by my wife... so breathing some new life into one of these PS2s will let me knock the dust off some of my favorite old-skool shmups.

TIA!!

Download free hdboot newbie version here http://psx-scene.com/forums/f153/unofficial-fhdb-1-93-noobie-package-obt-119562/ then use hdd raw copy program (also availible on that link) to put that image on your hdd then you can use winhiip (can get that program here) http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/playstation/tools/win-hip-transfer-iso-to-ps2-hardrive-working/to load your games onto said hdd (make sure to run winhiip as an admin or it wont work). Winhiip link has a tutorial but not sure of any tutorial on free hdboot here but an easy google will explain. All of that is done from your computer, when all set up just plug it into your ps2, launch OPL then pick game and play. Or you can get a free mcboot memory card from somewhere. I set mine up with the hd boot. Hope that can get you started and good luck.

First you need to get a FREEMCBOOT Memory Card Exploit (There are card makers on TiZ in the states)
You have all the bits you need. Both consoles are modifiable with FMCB.
IDE HDD - Most work, just avoid Western Digital IDE HDD's as they use a different sized connector block on HDD, which don't fit Network Adapter..... Without modding the HDD to fit/Network Adapter. Maxtor work great. 160gig HDD = ~60 games

One thing I would recommend is a USB External IDE HDD Caddy/Enclosure
This way you can plug the HDD into PC via USB to install games to (~20-40meg a second with WinHIIP - PS2 HDD Software for PC) This way you don't have to worry about if your PC has IDE PORTS etc.... Cheap n cheerful enclosures work but the ribbons are crappy.... I always buy 2 at a time....

Read Errors - Once you have HDD you don't need the disk drive....
If you can't read the original disks on the consoles, no worries, just use PC DVD drive and WinHIIP to rip them perfectly !

FreeMCBoot is quite cheap, you can ask for an installer on TiZ. I make them in UK for users... for a small fee of £5 + Postage

PS1 emulation is a little more complex on PS2.. But it can be done....
Get used to the PS2 side first before thinking about PS1 from HDD

There are a ton of PS2 nuts here, so if you get stuck, just ask :)

Install fhdb direct to hard drive avoids need for memory card ,you can set them up once fhdb is installed as it makes them.Nothing says it better than moving pictures

alright, I switched to a 320GB HDD instead.
so after I used WinHIID to image the drive, it shows there's only 117GB available.
but that disk image is only 7.6GB
320.00
- 7.60
312.40

what the hell happened to the other 195GB on my HDD?

ZX81v2

Just FYI, Western Digital IDE HDD is the only one I've ever run in my PS2 and it works fine. The mod I had to made was to the adapter, not the HDD. I cut the aluminium sheeting to separate the molex connector and the ide which does no damage to it, but gives you the extra play room between the two needed for WD. You can still attach it to any other HDD without any issues. :geek:

In Winhiip make sure its set to 48 bit, click on options then tic 48 bit HDLoader. I guessing that is set to 28 bit.

Make sure you give WinHIIP Admin rights if on 7+
HDD's smaller than 128gig = 24bit format
HDD's BIGGER than 128gig = 48bit format

NEVER use TOXIC !

If the drive don't format correct size after you told it to, go to Options and tick FORCE 48bit and format the drive again.

If you format it it will erase the image, then you will have to reinstall image. You just have to click on options (top middle of screen) then tic 48 bit HDLoader and it will recalculate the drive. I Just tried on a 250 gig hdd i have, set to 28 bit it says 48 gig free with 48.25 fragments and when i tic 48 bit it recalculates and says i have 152 free with 48.25 fragments . (I have a little over 31 gig used and fragments are from me removing some games i had on it) Make sure you run winhiip as admin though.

Nope... It just boots to the regular menu with "Browser" and "System Configuration" to choose from.
No other options. I hear the HDD fire up when I turn the console on, but nothing differnt happens from when I didn't have the HDD installed.

Is there a step or component I'm missing? Some special memory card or something?
