Sega Saturn Region Free Chips?

Sega Saturn Region Free Chips?

Postby baycityanri » Mon Jul 17, 2017 7:03 am

Hello to anyone in the Sega Saturn scene. I've recently gotten my hands on a delicious, white Japanese Sega Saturn. I've got it opened up, planning on checking out the capacitors and so on. But I'm wondering if anyone in this community knows where I can get my hands on a possible Saturn region free chip so I can play US games on my Japanese Saturn. I know about the action replay cartridges but I want to mod it the right way since I already have it opened up.

I figured I'd ask here since I was able to get my hands on some PS1 modchips from an awesome member here a few months ago.

Hopefully I'll get lucky again :D

While not exactly what you're looking for, have you considered using a region patcher? A few years ago I used this very program hosted here for my region patching needs (in my case playing Radiant Silvergun on my US modded system) - has worked great for me in the past. Congrats on getting a Saturn, I love mine and will never part ways with it!

I can't say that I've heard of that before. It sounds interesting but how does it work? I read through it but I don't understand how you go about patching with the program.

It's really simple actually: you would load your ISO, then on the right side of the program there are regions you can select from. For example, when I was patching Radiant Silvergun, its check mark was originally set to J, switching it to U for my NA system. Then hit "patch" at the bottom right. Burn the new ISO to a CDR and popped that sucker into your modded Saturn. Note, it seems near impossible to even find a new modchip.

That seems like an alright temporary solution but I'm still hoping someone can point me in the direction of an actual modchip (if any are still around). It just seems like a hassle having to patch every game. Plus, I'm planning on buying actual Saturn Games and you can't patch those.

Much appreciated for both. I'm ashamed I didn't bother checking on eBay before asking here. I just figured it would be the same situation I was in a few months ago where PS1 modchips were hard to find.

Saturn doesn't play cdr backups without a modchip like the sega cd. I have a saturn modchip. It's not even soldered in there... just kinda taped and wrapped around the correct pin. I don't plan on selling it tho lol... MINE!!! If I remember correctly, it didn't solve the region issues. I remember patching games. When you do get org games... (I have many myself)... You can always back them up, and patch them with the region of your saturn.. Then you can keep the org discs in a safe place while still enjoying your purchases. :ugeek: BTW thx for posting the saturn region patch app link. This version looks way more advanced than what I remember using... I'll have to dig out my Saturn from storage, and see if the modchip allows me to play games from other regions. I will update this post when that happens.
