Converting videos to XMV?

Postby XC-3730C » Wed Jun 20, 2018 5:25 am

I want to convert some TS and MP4 videos to XMV format, so I can use them as video previews for some Xbox games and emulators. I did a google search on this subject, but there isn't a whole lot of info on this subject.

What can I do to convert videos to Xbox's XMV format?

Try KiXXX's (iirc aka SPPV) Any2XMV toolset/app posted in the forums on xbox headquarters web site. Read the entire thread to make sure you get the latest version available there.

In just went through this for my n64 pack. Starting on this page we go through several options.
http://www.emuxtras.net/forum/viewtopic ... &start=130

It depends on your version of windows on what you can get working. For me I only had luck with this...
http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/xbo ... uper-easy/
and only after I got a ton of codex from this install...
https://www.mediaplayercodecpack.com/

But I was limited to converting one at a time. Or at least that's all I could figure out. Try the other stuff the guys mention. Eventually I had to rely on Nemesis to convert everything.

I first need to add, that I am on Windows 10, and that I am using a Happague HD-PVR 1212 to capture video from my Xbox, and the resulting file is a TS format video. I tried Any2XMV, and the resulting XMV had audio and video out of sync. I tried coverting the TS file to MKV, and then running Any2XMV again, but same result.

Unfortunately, xmv_converter_pack_Bubbles that you mentioned came up in Windows 10 as having a virus, so that's out...

Definitely get that media player codec pack. It will help no matter what you choose. Other than that, read the rest of that thread. The guys were all using different things. I can't really give more advice than that because I ended up failing.

Try playing the files on the Xbox.

I know when I play converted files on my laptop the audio is out of sync with the video. It might just be my slow computer can't handle playing XMV's properly. However, once transferred to the Xbox, they play as expected without any audio sync problems.

Unfortunately, xmv_converter_pack_Bubbles that you mentioned came up in Windows 10 as having a virus, so that's out...

As for the virus, I'd say your software is a bit touchy and flags a lot of FALSE positives. I scanned this download with Windows Defender and it showed no virus.

I'm amazed that it didn't flag Any2XMV 2 from KiXXX as I thought Windows Defender kept flagging it as a virus for the way KiXXX created the app but maybe that was an older conversion app he wrote. Rocky5 had mentioned something about why some of KiXXX/SPPV's older converter apps kept being flagged as a virus. I just don't recall what the reason was.

Update: Scanned Any2XMV with Defender and no virus found! :) Must have been one of SPPV's older apps it didn't like b4.

I've been using SPPV's Any2XMV tool a lot over the past 18 months in relation to creating game previews for those games not included in the preview pack here. Also for making better previews because some of those in that pack are a bit rough.

I prefer using an earlier iteration of Any2XMV which converts files individually rather than, as the 'final' version is set up to do, batch convert. Works fine for me with a Win7 64bit system and I tried it on a XP 32bit VM too and it ran well.

I've found Any2XMV works great for the direct conversion of .bik video files some games use and the only issue I have with it is that when converting YT .mp4 to .xmv the sound level, in some cases, ends up being lower than I'd like. I've not noticed any sound sync trouble but then for most game preview material you would not notice that anyway unless it was really serious.

But I have noticed another thing recently, not related to Any2XMV at all AFAIK, and that is whilst all .xmv stuff from that preview pack plays perfectly on the Xbox those same video files, even using VLC which usually plays them perfectly, will stall completely. But it is very random.

The DeadOrAlive3.xmv from that pack is one example: it stalls at 3 seconds using VLC and another media player I tried had problems displaying it from the same point. But transfer the .xmv file to the Xbox and it plays without any such issues.

What resolution should I capture in? My HD-PVR captures 720X480, and the only formats I can capture in is TS and MP4. I am trying to make an XMV for Xbox Live Arcade. I haven't been able to find an XMV for that anywhere.

Krah wrote:Depending on what dash you are using mp4s will play as is, no need to convert..Rocky5s synopsis mod for xbmc does this

I am using the same. Even MP4 format yields the same result (audio and video out of sync) when played on my Xbox. The original file that I captured with my HD-PVR is a TS file, and plays perfectly on my Windows 10 PC.

I found this a long time ago. It's a big PNG with all the details on it.
It's to big to attach so had to use FD

You need an older OS to use the Windows Media Encoder v9 like win7. It will not work on win10

I have a Windows XP PC that I use for EEPROM dumping, or I can use Windows 7 in VMware, so I am set.

You can use my batch converter to convert to xmv.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzRN8 ... lBqald6dTQ

As for MP4 audio going out of sync play with the video setting in the XBMC settings menu, also use SD video files and low bitrates to keep stuff playing fine.

You can configure setting by editing the config.ini file.

By default it’s set to use FFMPG to convert to xmv, but you can change it to use the wm8eutil program that meant to be used to convert to wmv2. So you can play about.

Ok I will try that out, thanks. I capture to TS or MP4 at the highest bitrate on my HD-PVR, then I convert. I may recapture the video with a lower bitrate, but I don't want the resulting XMV to look as bad as some of the XMV's I have downloaded. I would really love a 720p preview XMV for every retail game some day...

It is strange, because the XMV's I downloaded don't have the audio/video sync issue. Only the one I converted from MP4 or TS to XMV has this issue. The video I want an XMV of is for Xbox Live Arcade, and I want to create move of my own XMV's, once I get the issues worked out.

Rocky5,

I tried your suggestions. Same result. Should I convert my captured TS or MP4 file to WMV first?

Skullz613,

I got the file, thanks! I will try that method out in a day or so.
