Dreamcast burning 101

Postby Anthony817 » Sun Sep 18, 2011 3:49 am

Ok, I know many folks ask about burning Dreamcast games, so I am creating this thread in hope that it will be helpful to newbies to the Dreamcast world.

Step 1. Get The UPDATE v1.3 IMGBurn 2.5.7.0 w/ Dreamcast Drivers here.
http://theisozone.com/downloads/pc/othe ... t-drivers/

Step 2. Unpack and install the program to your PC.

Step 3. Take the Discjuggler plugin files from the package and place them in the root directory of the place you installed IMGBurn to.

Step 4. Take your ISO file and place it on your descktop.

Step 5. Start up IMGBurn and select burn image.

Step 6. Browse for your iso and then uncheck the verify box, and set the program to lowest speed possible, 4X is the speed the Dreamcast reads from, don't go below this, but 8x and 16x work fine too.

Step 7. Start burning your game and wait till its done.

Step 8. After burning label your game or pop it into your Dreamcast and you should have a working game!

If anybody has any questions, or would like to add to this or correct any mistakes I have made, post below and I will add to it or correct it.

If you need further instructions, read this Tutorial here made in 2012.

I see these questions all the time i think we should cover some basics so we can toss a link to a person rather then repeat it over and over. I have had great luck with Alcohol %120 and may add how i burn with it but it seems like i might just scratch that one because i find myself burning with IMGburn for everything now.

If only IMGburn had a virtual drive lol.

Yeah, I use to use Discjuggler and Alcohol 120
5, but after atreyu added this amazing package, I didn't hesitate to convert to using only this. I have not had 1 game fail for me since using this program with DJ plugin files.

Although, the burning slow thing is a myth. It was true like 7 years ago because the technology couldn't handle the speed. But now, with enhanced technology, you can burn with the highest speed without losing any data. Trust me, I do it all the time.

Seriously? I mean, I have burnt maximum before, but it is the Dreamcast that only reads at 4x, but the ones I burnt worked ok.

I let IMGburn do AWS on mine most of the time, sometimes i will set it to 6x for PS2 dvds but honestly i think i need to do some research on this.

I assumed the slower speed means a stronger imprint in the DVD/CD that would last much longer and less chance of read write/errors. But at times ive seen games like FF7 burn and skip and run funky till i reburned with AWS and it ran fine... so i let PS1 game rip AWS.

This issue bothers me in a way, i have burned games and they have not worked and yet reburn them again and it works fine. I hate wasting disks on shit so im curious if there is a sure fire way to burn anything perfect the first time like take in the factors on CD/DVD writers speeds and the media you burn with speeds also. I see on some programs like ImgBurn it has way more speed options vs alcohol %120 but at the same time i think ImgBurn can try to force speeds your burner may not like to burn at (i think Tobaccoo talked about this a while back) I think i will go and look up my DVD burners speeds and information and my media and base my speed on something they both agree on, i think it may just be hardware ability in the end when it comes to speed. I hate the fact there are so many things that can factor a disk not working my spare PS2 is starting to struggle on disks now being picky about reading them but i cant pinpoint if its the media or the system.

Now i think i want to see if i can burn stuff at max and see lol
