Your favorite and least favorite video game genres

Postby Kvothe » Tue Mar 13, 2018 7:24 pm

Everyone has their own bias towards certain video game genres. While I have played and enjoyed a game from almost every main genre out there, there are still genres and subgenres that I am more keen on trying compared to others.

For instance, I have a soft spot for the hack & slash RPG subgenre (Diablo, Dungeon Siege, Fate, etc.), action-adventure games (and it's various subgenres, including survival horror), racers, platformers and singleplayer oriented FPS games. My least favorite genres are RTS games (can't really get into them), MOBA's, walking simulators, adventures, MMORPGS (well, actually most online oriented games to be honest), multiplayer oriented FPS games (with a few exceptions, such as Quake 3, Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1942) and plane simulators (actually, most simulators, apart from car and space simulation). All the other genres are in between. I do enjoy certain action, sports, puzzle, rhythm, tycoons and 4X strategy games, as well as other diverse genres, tho they are not always my first pick.

What games do you guys have a soft spot for?

I'm an out and out shmup fanatic, i love them and it's a genre that doesn't get a whole lot of love outside of japan, hence why we've alway's had a poor release rate with the genre over here in pal land.
I collect for the MD and the prices on some of the shooters on the system has gone through the ceiling last 10 years.
Luckily for me i got all the big name one's because i picked them up years ago, eliminate down, gleylancer, panorama cotton, slapfight, gaiares, battle mania daiginjou, twinkle tale, undeadline, to name a few.
I also like light gun games, action platformers, racing games and run and gun's.
Genres i don't particularly like, sports games, puzzle games, rpg's, rts, sims (like flight sims, train sims) not a big fan of 2d/3d platform games either.
Games like tetris, fifa, command and conquer, final fantasy, are very boring for me, TBH though, i have played ff7 all the way through to the end, and i've still got the original american release i purchased back in about 97ish, but could never see the big deal myself, the story kept me going but the random battles and level trawling were a real bind.

I grew up in love with the arcades of the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's, so my tastes tend to sway towards those types of games.
Fighting, racing, shooting and shumps, platform, puzzle, pinball - they're usually my go-to's for quick video game fixes normally.
However I do like older first person shooters when I'm in the mood - original Doom-style, all the way up to Quake 3/Unreal Tournament 2004 era. The Call Of Duty 4 rabid fanbase killed me expressing any love for the genre in normal gaming circles.
RPGs - the only couple that have kept my attention (even though never finished) was Final Fantasy 7 and 8, and Grandia 1 and 2.

My least favorite games have to be any that REQUIRE online or multiplayer, or both.
Also the World Of Warcraft/Call Of Duty/Battlefield/Counter Strike generalized community who call themselves gamers, but knock or don't play anything other than said game series. I'd take a stab at putting Minecraft in that list too, but it's really a game for kids, so i got nothing against it - except for the thousands and thousand of videos of it on YouTube. My lord, why have so many people recorded that game??

I like a variety of games, like 2D/3D platformers, adventure, RPG, racing and strategy.

I really can't stand sports related games and shoot-em-up/ 1st person shooters. Sports in a game has never interested me and shooting gets boring fast (except Rez, the music breaks up the monotony well).

SHMUPS to me are the definition of what an arcade game is meant to be.... I grew up playing Sonic Wings 2 at my local Pizza King and the genre stuck with me ever since and I haven't found anything to be as replayable as a shmup, to me they never get old.... I have been playing zombiegauze's GOD xbox for 4 days now and I am finding shmups I didn't even know about... my life is changed

lightgun games are my second favorite... I also grew up playing Police Trainer at the same Pizza King lol

I may get some flack for this but RPG's are fucking retarded and a waste of time, i dont want to read a book when I play a video game, I wanna blow shit up cause mayhem not walk around a virtual town and talk to non existent "people" and press A and read thought bubbles... what a dumb genre

I've come to realise I'll play pretty much anything, but the genre I'm the least excited by is 3D platformers. Think Mario 64/Banjo etc. I never had an N64 growing up so maybe that's the reason, because I DID play Ape Escape and Croc back in the day and I still enjoy them now.

I enjoy playing shmups and some rhythm games, but I suck at both these genres!

My favourites are shooter looters like Borderlands/Destiny, and games with great stories (MGS, the Last of Us etc)

My favorite genre is Metroidvania games - especially if they are done in an 8-bit or 16-bit style. The exploring, maps, inventory, backtracking to previously unreachable areas after an upgrade or special item is very appealing to me, and it's easy to pick up and play.

I don't like First Person Shooter games. The genre was great back during the Doom/Call of Duty era, but now it seems that with few exceptions, they are all practically the same clones of each other. I also HATE free to play games (I know it's not really a genre), because I grew up in an era where you paid once for a game, and that's it (unless the physical copy got lost or stolen).

Favorites:
ARPGs, Hack n' Slash, 3D Platformers.

Least Favorite:
Simulated versions of real-life Card and Board Games and Sports Games.

I tend to view Digital Card games as bottom of the barrel garbage, quick cash grabs essentially,
I hate sports games because with sheer numbers they clog up shelf space that belongs to much better games.

On the other hand I love the freedom of 3D platformers and the investment you can get from bolting RPG elements onto a concept is a good way to keep me hooked, Hack n' Slash is great because it takes away some of the artificial limitation of turn based combat and puts more emphasis on player skill in lining up hits etc.
