Need Help With My PS3's Fan Issue.

Postby FFTHEWINNER » Thu May 24, 2018 12:03 pm

i have had a fat PS3 since Christmas 2009 when i bought it new. however,i never really used it that much until last year when i started using it heavily. it has rebug 4.82 CFW. i know that the old PS3 models are prone to failure,so to insure it doesnt overheat i had set its fan to start sooner and stronger than normal (auto at 40* Celsius with a minimum of 34% fan speed). this ofcourse caused the fan to be a bit loud, which i didnt mind that much.

however,a weird thing started to happen a few weeks ago: as soon the PS3 starts, the fan starts working at full speed with a loud sound for like 15 seconds, then it apparently stops(the sound pretty much disappears for a few seconds)then it resumes working at full speed for another 15 then stops for a few seconds and so on.

do note that with all that the PS3 its self still works and is playable without any hangups or freezes. however,i am worried because of this fan issue. what is the reason for it?and what can be done to fix it?

If you have Cobra enabled with REBUG CFW it may be trying to control the PS3's fan, it will turn on 100% when hitting a certain temperature.

I have cobra enabled, but that isn't the issue. What I described starts as soon as the ps3 starts, which means the ps3 isn't that hot yet. And it is at full speed for like 10-15seconds,stops working for a few seconds, resumes again and so on. It is also a very recent issue, even though I have had cobra enabled for months.

Might need a blowing out and maybe even a new thermal paste application. I would try just blowing out dust first though, because it's a bit of work to remove the heatsink and everything.

Could be the fan is having issues itself too, though.

Evening gentleman. I'd have to disagree, the processors on those older systems heat up pretty quickly. Clean and repaste. If that doesn't work I would have a professional look at it. Could be time for a reball.

how would i blow it out/thermal repaste it?

also, the processors heating up is the reason i had set it the fan to work really hard since i started using the PS3 heavily,so how can it heat up in spite of that?
