Here's a great tutorial from Ne0 at fileforums: http://fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=87216
They also go through a few other methods

Tested it myself on my FreeMCBoot PS2 slim

This saves you having to snatch out the disc mid spin on the PS boot screen ragging your motor or possibly etching a disc

Recipe for playing psx back up games on a softmodded (not chipped) PS2 with PSXLauncher.ELF

1. PS2 v.9/SCPH 5000x and up
2. uLaunchelf
3. FMCB (1.8 preferably)
4. sliding tool or flip top cover for fat/slim PS2
4a. fat PS2 flip-top lid
4b. slim PS2 flip-top lid
4c. sliding tool/magic key
5. USB stick
6. PS1 game
7. PSXlauncher.ELF (the enchilada)

for a slim ps2: you must have an mc exploit and "your slim needs to be sensor modded." look for a tut for how to sensor mod your slim. psxlauncher will work on your slim if the sensors are blocked.

so i'm assuming that you already have a memory card exploit. from your PC download psxlauncher.ELF and copy & paste it to your USB stick. in uLE's filebrowser, go to mass: to access your USB stick and then push R1 to copy psxlauncher.ELF. now go to mc0: (your memory card) and in the boot folder paste psxlauncher.ELF. now your ready to boot psxLauncher.

now push O on your gamepad to open psxlauncher.ELF that you just pasted. a black screen will appear with instructions of how play psx games (it's so freaking hard to read the lettering on the screen).

ok, now do this

1. insert your original PS1 game (don't press any buttons yet)
2. the game will spin for a few seconds. after it stops, "swap" the disc with your PSX back up with a sliding tool or with your flip top PS2 lid.
3. press "X"

**it helps to have the disc tray open during FMCB and then pop the orig psx game as soon as psxlauncherelf is already on your screen.

if you got it right on money then the PS1 logo will appear and tadda!!!! you're now playing your psx back up game.

if you are having trouble booting psxlauncher.elf then you are experiencing 1 out of 4 things.
1. you don't have a flip top ps2 case or don't have a sliding tool.
2. you are probably not doing the slide tool trick right.
3. your psx back up was a bad burn.
4. your ps2 slim isn't sensor modded.

Only seems to be able to boot backups from the same region as the console.
I even tried swapping in a retail Jap game after swapping out my retail PAL and it didn't work.

So.... you'll need to make sure your backups are the same region as your PS2 console

If it's a slim you can always switch out the original disc.
When the psx logo boots the disc will slow, change it for your backup and it should run.
This barbaric method will let you play imports and backups from a diff region.
Obviously you need to block the sensors to do this method.

Some people can even switch discs from the browser screen after it displays the PSX game present

uLaunchELF has a disc stop function that you can utilize to swap PS1 discs. It stops the spinning of the motor you take out your legit disc put your copy or import in and exit ulaunchelf, it then will promptly launch your game that you have in your drive.

Well the UlaunchELF method is in my opinion is the most reliable and safe. Plus you can play the Imports just fine the UlaunchELF method, without having to switch while spinning. .

Only works on v9+ PS2 systems and you have to swap like swap magic you can't just press eject or open the top without disabling the lid sensors.

This won't work for me either, And I even burnt a game that was the same region as my ps2 console. Maybe it can't be done....I have scph 39001, But I don't really know what version it is. Is that version 7?

this is pointless btw, if you have a slim that is, if you do have a slim and its sensor blocked, then just put in a retail version of a game, run it til the second boot screen (the ps logo one that looks a bit like a retarded A) then at that point, pull out the retail copy and insert the backed up game, its very hard to fail this, if you do just restart the machine and try again, ive been doing this for ages.

This stops the disc from spinning however thus lowering the chances of it getting ruined during the swap trick if you are new at this.

Yea this make swapping just as safe a loading a normal game and is great for the last model phats as well with a flip top. TO bad it was never ported for v7 and below as the scph-39001 is the best PS2 ever made quality wise.

Can this be done with a CHIPPED PS2?

Why would one need to use this for a chipped PS2? You can play PS1 games but chip or not it only works for the last phat SCPH-5000 series and all slims. Its due to the hardware revision too the system taking advantage if the way the PS2 loads PS1 images. Many great devs have tried making this for lower systems but doesn't work. You can just insert an original games at the memory cars screen wait to see the black disc and swap to a backup and that works for older models.

Actually, my chipped PS2 refuses to run any PSX backup. And my PS2 isn't armed for swap trick.

Well even this requires the swap trick as you have to have a PS1 game in then boot this and swap. What chip do you have? Drop me a PM man it may be something as simple as doing a certain combo with the power button or controller combo. I'm pretty good with PS2 hardware and have access to some really knowledgable modders being a mod at PSX-Scene and PSX-Place. But it may also it may be the chip install may need an extra wire soldered.
